Basic Physics Laboratory

The Basic Physics Laboratory is one of the important facilities to support the physics education for the fresh-year student in Insitut Teknologi Bandung. The laboratory is owned by the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Institut Teknologi Bandung. To conduct experiments, the laboratory collaborates with Department of physics and the Common First Year Program Unit (TPB). The laboratory not only serves FMIPA students, but also for nine others Faculties at Institut Teknologi Bandung.

The Basic Physics Laboratory serves laboratory work activities for first year undergraduate students. The learning outcomes for this activities are that the students:

  • acquire understanding of practical methods in experimental physics.
  • are able to solve technical problems in a physical experiment.
  • are able to relate the experiment to the relevant physical theory.
  • are able to process empirical data in relation to theoretical physical predictions using adequate statistical and graphical tools.
  • are able to properly describe experimental methods and results in technical reports.

To achieve the learning outcomes of the Basic Physics courses, the Basic Physics Laboratory sets up 13 experiment modules for each semester. The modules for the first semester are related to concepts in mechanics, such as Newton’s law, conservation of momentum and impulse, elasticity and mechanical waves. The modules for the second semester, on the other hand, are related to concepts in electrostatics, magnetism and electromagnetic waves. The equipment owned by the Basic Physics Laboratory vary from basics to sophisticated equipment.
